We compare mono-repo and multi-repo strategies and explain when each should be used.
The Mono-repo Approach
Hosting multiple projects in a single repository makes shared code, atomic changes, and consistent versioning easier. However, builds and tooling support can become harder as you scale.
The Multi-repo Approach
Keeping each component in a separate repository enables independent versioning and team autonomy. In return, dependency management and cross-cutting changes become more complex.
Decision Criteria
Your team structure, the frequency of dependencies between components, and your tooling ecosystem determine the choice. Most organizations adopt a hybrid approach.
